TVNHS-Mathematics Department Continues ‘Catch Up Together’
TVNHS, through the Mathematics Department, continued to bring fun-filled and educational Catch Up Together activities on Catch Up Friday to selected pupils of Tropical Village Elementary School and selected Grade 10 students from Tropical Village National High School on April 12, 2024.
With the goal of enhancing the numeracy skills of the selected TVES pupils, the Mathematics Department, led by Mrs. Lea P. Amon, OIC-Department Head, facilitated the last session of Catch Up Together.
Mrs. Jenilyn S. Loyola, Master Teacher I, introduced the game “Tumbang Numero.” It is a game based on the famous “Tumbang Preso,” where the player hits a can with a slipper. The game “Tumbang Numero” had the twist of involving cans labeled with numbers and operations. The score for the teams will come from hitting cans and performing the operations. The game enhances the logical and critical thinking of the students. Mrs. Loyola asked the students if they were familiar with the game. She also asked about the basic rules of playing “Tumbang Numero.”
The students were divided into two teams; each team had a chance of hitting the cans within a given time. The game started with a toss of the coin to determine who would hit first.
After playing “Tumbang Numero,” selected grade six students were joined by selected grade 10 students in playing “Game of Numbers.” It was indeed a catch-up together, watching how grade 10 students and grade 6 pupils worked as a team. “Game of the Numbers” is a game based on the famous “Game of the Generals.” The students showed interest and excitement during the game while solving the mystery of catching the flag of the opponent.
The activity developed the mental abilities of the students. In addition, the most important part of the game was that it developed camaraderie and sportsmanship. The students learned mathematics with fun and enjoyment while playing “Tumbang Numero” and “Game of Numbers.”
It is indeed true that learning is not limited to the four corners of the classroom. From the given sessions of Catch Up Together with elementary students, it proved that learning mathematics is fun and enjoyable.
