TVNHS, through the Mathematics Department with the assistance of FS students from Cavite State University – main campus, continued to bring fun-filled and educational Catch Up Together activities on Catch-Up Friday to selected pupils of Tapia Elementary School on May 3, 2024.

With the goal of enhancing the numeracy skills of selected Tapia Elementary School pupils, the Mathematics Department, led by Mrs. Lea P. Amon, OIC-Department Head, facilitated the Catch Up Together.

Ms. Arlyn M. Pasa, Teacher II, introduced the game “Tumbang Numero.” It is a game based on the famous “Tumbang Preso,” where the player hits a can with a slipper. The game “Tumbang Numero” had the twist of involving cans labeled with numbers and operations. The score for the teams will come from hitting cans and performing the operations. This game enhances the logical and critical thinking of the students. Ms. Arlyn Pasa asked about the basic rules of playing “Tumbang Numero” and added the other rules of the game aside from the typical rules of “Tumbang Preso.”

The students were divided into two teams; each team had a chance of hitting the cans within a given time. The game started with a toss of the coin to determine who would hit first.

After playing “Tumbang Numero,” selected grade six students were joined by FS students from CvSU – main campus in playing “Giant Damath” inside the classroom. It is a modification of the game “Dama” where in performing fundamental operations are included if the player takes or eats the opponent’s player. In order to gain their score, they need to perform MDAS (multiplication, division, addition or subtraction).

The activity developed the mental abilities of the students. In addition, the most important part of the game was that it developed camaraderie and sportsmanship. The students learned mathematics with fun and enjoyment while playing “Tumbang Numero” and “Giant Damath.”. At the end of the activity, both the yellow and green teams earned 1 point. Yellow won in “Tumbang Numero,” while Green won in “Giant Damath.”
