Intending to raise the awareness of Tropicalian learners about teenage pregnancy, Tropical Village National High School conducted a symposium entitled “Teenage Pregnancy Awareness” on March 8 at the school’s covered court. It was participated by selected grade 7-10 learners.
Ms. Marilyn M. Virgo, a Health and Science teacher from St. Joseph Academy, a registered midwife, and a nurse, discussed the effects of being pregnant at an early age on the health and well-being of teenagers.
Furthermore, she mentioned the dilemmas that young parents will undergo economically, personally, and psychologically. For example, teenagers who engage in premarital sex and get pregnant at an early stage can have medical complications for both the mother and their child.
She also gave emphasis on the hindrances that teenagers will encounter in the personal aspects of their lives, such as not being able to continue their studies because they have to take care of their children rather than attend school and learn.
Questions and queries were also encouraged during the activity for information dissemination. Some students clarified questions such as what agency can help young people in this kind of situation.
Lastly, a certificate of recognition was given to Ms. Marilyn M. Virgo for the significant contribution she rendered as the resource speaker for the said activity.
The said symposium was conducted on Catch-up Fridays in adherence with DepEd Memorandum No. 001, s. 2024, titled “Implementation of Catch-up Fridays focusing on Health Education Program.
